A Tie-dye Tshirt Was All the Rage in Thailand!
Her parents had obviously bettered themselves a bit and owned their own house or at least had a mortgage, but every now and then her father would invest some money because he thought he knew what he was doing, and then loose it all spectacularly! He thought that Sophie didn’t know, but she knew it all. Those were the times when she was not given pocket money at all and her mother was forever grumbling about not having any money. They still managed to pay for Sophie’s schooling, which was a hardship a lot of the time, and if she had not got a third of a scholarship years later when applying for the sixth form, she would not have been able to go. Sophie was quite selfish, self obsessed at that time, and even now she could still see that in herself. She did often say ‘why me!’ in front of the mirror to the world or to God or someone, but no one ever answered. She had moments of lucidity where she became engrossed in saving the world or saving cats or a hedgehog, but sooner rather than later she would turn to her materialistic and selfish ways. She was a nice girl, down to earth girl some of the time, but she could do better. Going to Thailand helped this. She no longer felt she was a in class war with herself and just ran around on beaches looking bohemian and wearing tie-dye tshirts and smoking pot. She became much more down to earth when she turned the first day of University in a dyed t-shirt and found that everyone else was wearing them or a version of them. That is where the real change came in Sophie.
