Ebay, Facebook, Yahoo!, Google Protest Clause 17 of Digital Economy Bill

Ebay, Facebook, Yahoo! and Google have made their dissatisfaction felt about a clause in the Digital Britain legislations. The four top internet companies have put their objections in the form of a written petition to Secretary of State Lord Peter Mandelson.

The internet biggies have stated their disapproval of Clause 17 of the Digital Economy Bill in the petition that they have jointly sent to Lord Mandelson. They claim that this clause will give unprecedented clout to any Secretary of State- present or future – to significantly modify existing copyright laws in the UK. This could be a dangerous situation, given that the laws affect several industries, especially the entertainment industry.

The protestors have pointed out that the clause will open up avenues for the Secretary of State to impose stringent monitoring on user activities online. This will be a severe restriction on the freedom and privacy of users, leading to a general disenchantment with internet. In addition, excessive interference in industry operations will dampen any new interest and will curb innovative ideas and growth in this sector.

While expressing their protest, the companies have also made it clear that the ambitious and progressive programmes for the future growth of Digital Britain are fully supported by them. However, serious concerns have been raised on whether the growth will indeed materialise in face of such restrictive provisions. The companies have claimed that even legal and legitimate activities by users could be penalised if such measures are brought into effect.
