On the Lookout for an Atypical Career? Training as an Ultrasound Technician Will Fulfil All Your Expectations

The recent economic fiasco has hit hundreds of thousands of businesses and corporations hard although, fortunately, the medical profession has mostly been spared the crunch. There are more job openings than ever before, making it far simpler to land your dream job. The yearly salaries for specialized medical staff have gone through the roof, and are still continuing to increase, thus making ultrasound techs and other related healthcare careers extremely profitable. The ultrasound technician program is one that involves much more than you would expect. It’s not as complex or intense as becoming a doctor, but there is still a considerable amount of medical knowledge and practice (like patient handling and ethics) to digest. To qualify for the ultrasound technician program, the first thing you’ll need is a high school diploma. If you haven’t earned one, it’s extremely unlikely that you’ll make the cut. Then, it generally takes 2 years to complete the course, unless you’re already employed in a similar field. It’s worth mentioning that you will not be able to take readings independently or gain employment as a sonographer until you have finished the program — the training sessions will always be supervised.

As a trained sonographer, you will utilize sound waves to capture images of the internal organs and tissues for the diagnosis and treatment of medical problems. We’ve all been under the care of doctors, so we can appreciate being told what is going on. Your primary duties, whatever the actual problem, will be to prep, care for and regularly inform the patient about the procedure at hand.

If performing the actual sonogram is part of your job description, you will apply a lubricating gel to the relevant area on the patient’s body and perform the scan, either looking for organ problems or checking up on a fetus.

Another, more specialized technique involves introducing a sonic probe inside the body itself — for instance, if it is located inside the gullet, sharper and more detailed pictures of the heart can be obtained (as it is located just in front of the esophagus). Although the majority of ultrasound technicians are ultrasound generalists, with at least five years worth of experience, you can attempt to become an instructor in the field. The obvious places to start searching for work are hospitals and long-term care facilities, as well as businesses specializing specifically in sonographic research. There is also the option of working in women’s clinics, using ultrasounds for diagnosing breast conditions, such as cancer.

So if you’re looking for a technical job in the medical field that you can master in a couple of years, why not find out if you can make the ultrasound cut? Apply today!
