Professional Ultrasonography: a Remarkable Career Choice
Since 2008, the state of the country’s economy has hit millions of businesses and corporations hard although, thankfully, the medical profession has mostly been spared the crunch. Trained experts and applicants willing to learn are in high demand, making it far simpler to land a position of your own choice. Financially, it’s an attractive career path to take. Ultrasound operators are being fought over left, right and center and, as a result, they receive a healthy annual salary. Now let’s turn our attention on what successful candidates actually do. The successful student will learn the multiple medical disciplines (anatomy, physiology, basic engineering etc) required to safely and efficiently perform their role. To get into the ultrasound tech program, the first thing you’ll need is credited proof of a degree in science and/or healthcare. If you don’t possess one, it’s extremely unlikely that you’ll make the cut. Then, it generally takes 2 years to graduate, unless you already work in a hospital and have arranged a departmental transfer. Many hospital regulations, however, state that only fully qualified ultrasound technicians are allowed to operate independently: the training sessions will always be supervised. As a fully qualified sonographer, you will utilize sonic waves to produce images on a screen. You’ll be responsible for getting the patients ready, talking through the procedure, making sure that they obey the proper precautions, and double-checking their medical history.
The practice of sonography involves sending HF sound waves into areas of the patient’s body to produce an image on a screen, either of a fetus or of an impaired organ. Ultrasound techs can expect to make an mean salary in the range of $65,000-$70,000 each year and, in addition, there are no set hours: they can range from sporadic to full time. Although the majority of ultrasound technicians are ultrasound generalists, with at least 5 years worth of experience, you can apply to become a teacher in the field. Hospitals are obvious centers of employment, as well as syndicates specializing specifically in sonographic testing. There is also the possibility of plying your trade in women’s clinics, using ultrasounds for diagnosing breast conditions, such as cancer.
