Questions for Minister over Construction Work Placements

Apprentices of construction skills such as carpentry, brickwork and formwork, among others, were visited by the Education Minister Leighton Andrews. Students of Barry Colledge from the Cardiff Construction Training Center were able to ask Mr Andrews questions about their concerns over work placements during a seminar when he visitedthe center in Cardiff Bay.

Mr Andrews said “I believe the industry will rally strongly in the coming years”. He will be approaching the sector skills council regarding the students concerns over the coming week. Mr Andrews was given a guided tour of the facilities and workshops before meeting the group of thirty students, all of whom are taking part in the Pathways to Construction scheme.

Mr Andrews said: “I am pleased to have the opportunity to visit Barry College’s Construction Centre and see first hand the opportunities for students here. The specialist training on offer at the construction centre gives students the skills they need to build a career in the industry.

The Welsh Baccalaureate qualification adds a new dimension to the construction courses available at the college, aiming to broaden the experience and skills of students in preparation for the next step in their lives. There will be opportunities for all of you and I wish you all the very best. I am sure you will put the skills you learn here at Barry College to very good use.”
